RYAN HEFFINGTON is the choreographer behind SIA’s Chandelier video dance repertoire. The routine, performed in Chandelier video by talented 11-years-old Maddie Ziegler, went viral earlier this year with 200+ millions views on YouTube.
But this breathtaking video is not the only masterpiece featuring his brilliant and unique choreography. The California Yuba-City-born artist was also involved in some very spectacular works before and after Sia’s success with Chandelier Video. He worked with some serious cool band and some of them are amongst our favorite.
So, let’s take a look to his extraordinary highly-theatrical works, often exploring dance’s aesthetic and socio-cultural possibilities mixing choreography, video, music, dance and costume design.
Heffington’s visionary work is based on the concept that dance is art and life without art is nothing.
That approach to performances explores the physical presence and impact of diverse bodies, gestures and movements, with impressive results.
He described some of his works as “a psycho-sexual mash-up between Vaudeville, Gallagher, Lucille Ball, Wendy O. Williams, Bob Fosse, Pina Bausch and PJ Harvey”, and you will understand this better watching the following videos.
RYAN HEFFINGTON’S CHOREOGRAPHY FOR ARCADE FIRE ‘We exist’
The film for “We Exist” from acclaimed album Reflektor, follows the story of a young person’s struggle with gender identity starring Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield.
Heffington said he took inspiration from random Vimeo, YouTube and Vine videos where people perform improvised very own moves he transmit in his professional work. Believe it or not.
RYAN HEFFINGTON’S CHOREOGRAPHY FOR SIGUR ROS ‘Fjögur píanó’
The following NSFW work (contains scenes of nudity) is taken from the “Valtari mystery film experiment”.
The movie didn’t turn out to be the official video for Sigur Ros’ song, but was instead the winner of Best Documentary Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.
Directed by Alma Har’el (true genus) this video features Hollywood sensation Shia LaBeouf and explores another disease of our society, encouraging people to “break the chain” of self-disrespect.
RYAN HEFFINGTON’S CHOREOGRAPHY FOR CHET FAKER ‘Gold’
Of course not all Ryan’s works need to have a deep message.
In Chet Faker’s video for “Gold” single taken from Chet Faker’s debut album ‘Built On Glass’, we can have a perfect example of that.
It’s a low budget video featuring three rollerskaters and a… Final surprise.
Other great videos with Ryan Heffington’s magic touch are:
- Lykke Li ‘Gunshot’
- Hercules & Love Affair ‘I try to talk to you’ (featuring John Grant)
- Aloe Blacc ‘Love is the answer’
