SEND ME TO LONDON!
When Karen Miley, final year student of Photography at Griffith College Dublin decided to take part to the competition launched by Griffith College and Canon whose prize was to fly over to London Fashion Week and photograph some of the final shows, it was very last minute and she hoped to win.
But there is a big difference between secretly cultivating a hope and actually winning that prize, taking that flight, sitting down at a real fashion show with your camera and photograph, photograph, photograph… Well, Karen got the call, she won the competition thanks to her shot “Sleeping Beauty” and she had the chance to experience how does it feel to be a professional fashion photographer.
Here’s an exclusive interview to Karen in order to find out something more about her, her interests and the amazing experience Canon gave her the chance to live. Chance which happened to be very well deserved as you can see in the photos she has been taking in London and which are being showed here!
Your first project, last project and future project: how would you describe them?
My first project that I enjoyed, was street style shoot mixing Graffiti with Fashion in Dublin but it began to rain so we didn’t get the sunlight and blue sky we wanted. My last project was in black and white shot in a bathroom, it was quite conceptual and cheeky. My future project will be shot in Paris in a few weeks and that will have to be a surprise.
What do you find inspiring and how would you describe your lifestyle?
I find movies and art inspiring, but I think anything can inspire you. One of my favorite shots was inspired by the bow my model arrived with on her head.
What would you be today if you hadn’t followed your dreams of being a photographer?
I was signed up for Fashion Design but probably would be doing fine art maybe, I love to paint and create and I have finally opened the book on what I love to do so you might also see my paintings soon too.
Artists and events: could you tell us the most interesting that you’ve find in your career until now?
I was recently looking at Russell James and his work. I love it and I really love to work in black and white too; his backstage work is beautiful.
The place where you were born, the place where you live, the best place where you traveled with your work: can you tell us something that only you know to describe them?
I was born in Dublin, I live just outside Dublin now in a place called Poulaphouca, Irish meaning “Pool of the Pooka” Its a beautiful place lots of old forest and lakes at the foot of the Wicklow mountains.
The Best place I have travelled with Photography was London for Fashion weekend. Being flown over by Canon to shoot the catwalk shows was so Nice! (Smiling)
Why did you decide to take part to Canon’s award?
I took part in the competition hoping someone would love my work and give me a chance to go to London and experience Fashion Week.
Were you expecting to win?
I think you enter and hope to win. I was so happy when I got the call to say I had won: its a lovely feeling to know some one loves your photo. It’s just amazing!
